Hands-on Classics in schools

Few things bring the ancient world to life more vividly than the experience of seeing and feeling objects from the ancient world. The Iris Project, in collaboration with The Open University, aim to make this experience possible for children from all backgrounds through the Artefact Sessions.

These sessions involve bringing genuine ancient Roman and neolithic tools into primary and secondary schools so that pupils can experience these objects first hand. The sessions involve an introduction to how we know things about the ancient world through discoveries of artefacts, followed by an opportunity for pupils to explore the artefacts for themselves using accompanying worksheets.

The pupils then make presentations to their fellow classmates about their findings, so that they take on the role of researchers for the session!
