Love Latin

Are you a classicist? Are you willing to volunteer and give a talk to a school?

Love Latin is a brand new Mayoral initiative run by The Iris Project which brings Latin and Classics to state schools across London through a team of volunteers.

The Mayor is a passionate advocate of Classics in schools and with this new initiative we are expanding Classics provision to many more schools across the capital!

Through a mixture of weekly Latin classes in primary schools and one-off workshops in primary or secondary schools, the scheme will unlock the mysteries of Latin and Classics for school children across the city.

The Latin classes in primary schools expands on an existing successful scheme run by The Iris Project, 'Literacy through Latin'. You can read more about it HERE.

The one-off workshops in secondary schools is a brand new programme which involves sending volunteers from all walks of life who have a classical background to give sessions in local schools on Classical topics which they are passionate about bringing to a new, young audience.

This scheme is part of the Team London initiative.

We have already had a fantastic response but we still want to hear from more people - you can fill in a registration form here.

Please also read this Q&A which answers some common questions about the scheme for potential volunteers. If you have any questions about the scheme which are not answered here, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Volunteers are welcome to talk on any aspect of Classics they feel would be interesting and accessible to a school audience. We have, some pre-prepared talks and notes for people to use and follow if they would like to. We also have some talks, presentations, and notes that have been submitted to us by volunteers. You can find all these on our resources page here. (Note: these are a mixture of powerpoint presentations and word documents for you to download)

Here is a small documentary on one of the talks delivered for the scheme this year, which includes footage of the talk, interviews with the volunteer and Iris staff, and feedback from the staff and pupils.

Classics Fairs

We are very pleased to be announcing the third of our Classics fairs this school year in London! This fair will be held this summer at University College London.

The date for the event is Monday 22nd July, 2013. The fair will consist of a wide-ranging, educational and fun half-day event for London school pupils from years 5 and 6. It will introduce pupils to what Classics is about through fun and interactive group sessions on different topics, as well as giving pupils a wonderful opportunity to visit University College London Department of Greek and Latin! It is particularly aimed at state schools where there is little or no provision of Classics. There will be a series of lively and accessible workshops for groups to attend, and lunch time stalls and entertainment. The fair will be officially opened by a well-known Classicist.
